What's Next on the Space Food Menu?

Astronauts get hungry too! That's why NASA and the CSA (Canadian Space Agency) have teamed up in the name of food! Space food that is. Together they are hosting the “Deep Space Food Challenge” where they are asking people to help build food systems fit for upcoming missions to Mars and other destinations. Talk about a cool way to contribute to the future of space exploration!

What is Space Food?

Many of us already find food prep tiring after a long day, but what if we add space to the mix too? Astronauts have their own, unique set of challenges when it comes to being nourished in space. For this reason, NASA and the CSA place importance on ensuring the food is tasty and nutritious, so astronauts continue to eat (we’re looking at you freeze dried ice cream), and can focus on the mission rather than food prep.

Next to this, the goal is to design food production systems which generate little waste and also require limited resources. Sustainability is a key factor here. The good news? These new technologies could be repurposed on earth too, in areas where people don’t have access to sufficient food sources. Talk about technology being put to great use!

Think You Could Win the Deep Space Food Challenge?

Next to helping feed the next generation of astronauts - how cool! You could win some serious coin to invest in other research ventures. Nasa is giving away $500K prize money, with CSA following suit with the equivalent of $300K. It’s great to see two important international organizations teaming up in the name of science...and food. Now there’s something to smile about.
