China holds the power to positively impact the future of sustainability with new “green ambitions”.

As the world’s largest population, China holds the power to have an immensely positive impact on the future of sustainability—it just depends on their choices. Lucky for us, they’re now making incredible strides to choose more environmentally friendly means of transportation. By the end of 2020, China had 4.92 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) on its roads, which accounted for 1.75% of the country’s total vehicles. New energy vehicles (NEVs) include electric, hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles. In only a decade, China increased the number of NEVs on the road by 250-fold, which is an incredible feat for any country. To put it in perspective, 10 years ago China only had 20,000 NEVs, and aimed to have 5 million sold by 2020 - they were just shy of achieving this very ambitious goal.

As a result of these “green ambitions”, China has become the largest electric vehicle (PEV) market. To put things in perspective, “In 2020, nearly half of the world’s plug-in electric car production and 90% of heavy-duty electric vehicle production was in China.” These goals were not achieved by chance either-- China already produces around half of world’s PEV batteries and has designed a solid battery manufacturing supply chain on its own soil. Next to this, China has also created the largest public charging network worldwide - 6 of every 10 public electric vehicle chargers in the world are located in China. It should also be mentioned that some of the most successful electric car companies are currently from China (SA, BYD, BAIC, and Geely).

China sustainable development strategy.

China’s “Five-Year Plans” have become world renowned for their top-down strategies for economic development, which tend to link the public and commercial sectors. It is exactly through these kinds of plans that NEV development has been able to become so successful, and furthermore, so quickly, in China. So what’s next for China when it comes to making their automotive industry even more sustainable? While it’s not yet known, (we’re waiting for the next 5-year plan), if they are able to put the same amount of drive as they did with previous plans, the sky’s the limit.
