While many studies have been done on empathy and what it is; in the simplest way, it helps us be better humans, by understanding and reacting to other people's emotions in a kinder way. It also helps us remove judgement, bias and prejudice from our lives, while having happier, more successful relationships at work and in private.

Types of empathy in future of work

There are three types of empathy which are each different in their approach and use, though they are all equally valuable: cognitive empathy (trying to understand the emotions of another), emotional empathy (sharing what someone is going through), and empathic concern or compassion (caring and wishing for the person to feel better).

Incorporating empathy in the workplace

To encourage more empathy in the workplace, As the old adage goes, try to put yourself in their shoes. Before becoming critical of a colleague when things are going differently to how you wish, try to understand what’s going on in their life and how this could impact their work. Next to this, keep in mind generational or gender differences, which could alter how certain things are perceived.

Benefits of empathy on work productivity

Being empathetic has clear benefits on how happy we are in the workplace, and furthermore how successful and productive we are as well. It also helps us take care of our “social health”, by forming more authentic relationships with our colleagues, which not only provides support, but also reminds us that we too are human when times get tough.

Empathy in the future of work

Though we should not let empathy cloud our judgement, get in the way of our business objectives or prioritize the needs of one over another, empathy can help us develop stronger bonds and working relationships with our colleagues. The benefits from this are numerous, ranging from increased happiness and productivity to lowering stress.
