These days, AI is playing a more prominent role in many sectors, including the future of work. There’s just one big problem—AI poses a threat to those who identify as queer.

What are the ethical dilemmas associated with AI?

Like other minorities AI has been called out for marginalizing, AI also poses a threat to those who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, asexual or transgender. Given the queer community has been historically marginalised, it’s very likely that AI will be designed with unfair outcomes for these individuals, as the inputted data will not show the complete picture. For example, as some individuals are not comfortable sharing details regarding their sexual or gender orientation, the data collected will be incomplete and have significant downstream consequences, especially with regards to healthcare and work opportunities.

AI behind social media content moderation

Next to this, the AI behind social media content moderation systems can often overlook things like misgendering or “deadnaming” of transgender people, which leaves them open to threatening remarks and attacks. Furthermore, in certain countries where revealing your sexual or gender orientation could be dangerous, AI poses an even greater risk. Even though you cannot determine someone’s sexual orientation from their face (at least according to a 2017 Stanford University study), AI has the potential to be “trained” to determine someone’s sexual or gender orientation from online behavioral data, which could result in malicious outing campaigns. This means that those within the queer community could be refused work, or even publicly outed in certain countries, as a kind of cruel weapon. At this stage, it is vital that algorithms are developed to improve fairness across all minority communities, including the queer community, to ensure AI practices are ethical.
