With divorce rates at record highs, one could argue that we humans aren’t that great at deciding who our best match is. Our society’s obsession with love and resulting love sickness has made many of us seek help from the local “love doctor” aka online dating platforms. With finding our “forever person” perhaps life’s greatest goal, our society has grown the online dating industry so much, that it’s now valued at more than four billion US Dollars. The market is mainly dominated by Match Group (who owns OkCupid, Match, Tinder and 45 other dating-related businesses…) You could say they are the champions when it comes to “the game of love.”

It’s not something new to learn that AI uses large amounts of personal data to determine patterns and make predictions. While this has historically been applied to fields many of us aren’t so interested in, it can also be applied to love… With this, tech and AI suddenly become a whole lot more interesting for many people. Dating apps can use AI in the form of kind-hearted chat bots guiding you through the ups and downs of romance, to methods of determining what is attractive to a person (looks as well as interests and personality), and even suggesting mutually enjoyable activities for a first date.

AI will be able to make increasingly accurate predictions.

“This would circumvent bias in how people represent themselves on matchmaking questionnaires. Research has shown inaccuracies in self-reported attributes are the main reason online dating isn’t successful… As more user data is generated on the internet (especially on social media), AI will be able to make increasingly accurate predictions.”

While grandma and grandpa may have met at Mel’s Diner after football and cheer practice in High School, life isn’t as simple as it once was for many of us. The pandemic coupled with hectic work schedules and increasing life demands has made meeting people, let alone “good matches” extremely difficult. Dating can be incredibly exhausting and painful for many—if there was a way to find love while lowering the risk of heartbreak by matching people based on similar values and goals, who wouldn’t sign up? I suppose that takes some of the “magic and wonder” out of dating, but with so many of us failing when it comes to love in the digital age, algorithms might be the answer we need, but just don’t want to admit to.

I won’t get started on VR (virtual reality) and the emerging concept of virtual girlfriends and boyfriends just yet… I would like to believe that each one of us has a special someone out there, we might just need technology’s help to find them.
