Deepfakes of important figures like heads of state are becoming more common, with some questioning whether Donald Trump’s concession speech was actually a deepfake.

Experts are worried that if we don’t develop a way to quickly identify deepfakes and remove them from circulation, they could encourage the spreading of conspiracy theories and malicious messages, not to mention misinformation. Next to this, women and those in positions of power are clear targets.

“Do not assume an online persona or individual is legitimate based on the existence of video, photographs, or audio on their profile,” the FBI warned.

So how do you spot a deepfake? With quickly improving technology it's not easy, but by being on the lookout for syncing issues, as well as distorted sound or video, you can generally determine if something is a deepfake.

Embracing artificial intelligence

While the future of deepfakes and how they will be managed remains unclear, one thing is certain: they are on the rise. While there are certainly clear benefits from technological developments, we as a society must also pay an eventual price. At this point in time, we can no longer trust what we see, and that is incredibly alarming.
