What the Blog? is an Essentials video series discussing what’s next for the AI industry, and what we’re all dying to know: Will artificial intelligence take over the world? Editors Isabella Moulton and Martin Jacobsz bring you a snappy summary of articles directly from our expertly curated AI Essentials Newsletters.

Our first article doesn’t disappoint when it comes to the latest AI news. If you thought Aladdin was cool, have we got something for you! MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) has created a carpet that can figure out your position without using a camera. What’s more? The model was able to guess a person’s position 97% of the time. Since many of our daily activities involve some kind of contact with the ground, like walking, exercising, or even sleeping, we can get so much information from technology like this. From activity tracking to calories burned...the possibilities are limitless. Read the article and other artificial intelligence news, here.

Our second article covers that the same institute that measured how many photons pass through a chicken, now wants to figure out exactly how much we trust AI. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) explains that general mistrust of AI can come from our friends and family’s views, as well as what we see in the media. By now, most of us have either experienced or witnessed the negative side of AI bias. For example, studies from academics and the NIST discovered that facial-recognition systems can misidentify Asian and Black people 100 times more frequently than white people.
